Mike Pozzi: This Travelling Life

Guildford Cathedral

Main entrance to the Cathedral

This is a very modern Anglican Cathedral next to Surrey University.  It is a very new structure, as cathedrals go. Consecrated in 1961, but construction started 25 years earlier.

Its style is Neo-Gothic/Art-Deco. Its full name is The "Guildford Cathedral-Church of the Holy Spirit" , or more colloquially 'The Peoples Church', because even though the foundation stone was laid in 1936, the people were able to contribute in 1954 by buying  brick for half a crown.
Its external brick  build reminds me of a steam-turbine power station, similar to Battersea Power Station and the Tate Modern.
It's certainly worth a visit to see how simple, yet majestic, a modern major building can feel, and yet less than a century old.

Unlike many of the centuries old cathedrals, Guildford is clutter free of numerous side chapels and statues of historical heroes.

Like most cathedrals, Guildford is also the spiritual home to its local regiment, 'The Queen's Royal Surrey Regiment' Complete with its own chapel and the regimental colours on display.

It is of course an active church with both religious services, choral and other social events.
